when mandy first inquired about booking several sessions to capture her pregnancy and newborn experience, she asked if i might be willing to come and photograph her two older children meeting their baby brother for the first time. willing? oh yes. i was thrilled. being in a labor and delivery unit at the hospital was almost like coming home for me….taking me back to the years i worked as a labor & delivery nurse. i sure do miss it! what priceless moments we were able to document that evening. watching jackson & grace light up upon meeting their new brother was such a beautiful sight to behold. i was honored to be part of it. mandy, thank you for inviting me in to share this special moment with your family. i cannot wait to see you all again for hudson’s newborn session.

in just a few short weeks i will have the pleasure of meeting mandy’s 4th child…a boy. i was beyond delighted when she was interested in not only maternity and newborn sessions, but a customized “meet and greet” session at the hospital with her two older children…meeting their baby brother for the first time. i can’t wait!

mandy you are gorgeous! thank you for trusting me to find a tucked away patch of green in the desert, for showing me a piece of your heart in our conversations about birth and loss and for choosing me to capture this precious time. i can’t wait to meet your little man!

at my age to say you have been friends with someone for well over 20 years is…well…it’s saying something. it means we didn’t meet in college or even high school. it means we met, literally, as children. i remember bike rides, playground antics, birthday parties, late nights, lots of laughter, boys, concerts, shopping, long phone calls…and yes, our fair share of stupidity. janella was my very best friend through the tumultuous teenage years. we played together, laughed and cried together. we truly grew up side by side and to this day…despite how the years have changed us and in some ways parted us..we can still finish each other’s sentences. and that, is a comforting and beautiful thing.

i just met kurt. like…JUST. at our session. and i will say that everything i had heard about him is absolutely true. he adores my dear friend. treats her with the love, respect and admiration she has long deserved. they make each other happy and complete each other in a way that i know neither of them has ever before experienced. it fills up my heart to witness it. there are few joys greater than to see true happiness in the ones you love….i am so thrilled to see this happiness in the two of you.

october cannot come soon enough! thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing me to capture these memories. i am so honored. and so deliriously happy for you both. xoxo

side note…could there be a better location for a session than the county fair? janella’s idea and i LOVED it. so.much.fun.

i am a newborn photographer. i may photograph many things, and truly wholeheartedly enjoy doing so, but…deep down..it’s who i am. i photograph newborns. and i LOVE it. perhaps it comes from my maternal instincts, my ache for my babies who are growing too fast. perhaps it is from my background as a labor & delivery nurse…and witnessing the miracle of life at its most raw, fresh and new state…having the blessed opportunity to be one of the first to welcome a new soul into the world. i miss that.

i have followed carrie & brit since the beginning. i marveled at how they could capture the purity of newborns like no other and i knew that one day, i wanted to learn from them. it has been a dream of mine to attend one of their workshops since they started holding them. i have always valued continuing education…it pushes & inspires me…and i like to learn from the best.

the weekend was a whirlwind. i have grown as an artist, made many amazing new friends who i will continue to cherish and soaked up the knowledge of two genuine, gifted and down-to-earth women.

i’ve decided to break down the images from the workshop into various blog posts highlighting each of the beautiful babies we met. i have lots of photos of some, just a few of others, but each was unique and beautiful in their own way. i simply adore these new people. their potential and innocence. it speaks to me in a way that nothing else i point my camera on can. it is truly, my calling.

it’s the first day of spring! and….it’s my birthday! good excuses as any to celebrate. my darling friends and family are pampering me well and i am feeling so loved that i want to spread the joy with a gift of my own. in honor of the arrival of this beautiful season and my, ahem, 30-something years on the planet i’m giving away my most favorite thing. a full newborn session. yep. full session and fully edited digital files. 35 of them. betcha can guess how old i am now huh? the winner will also have the opportunity to book a discounted mini maternity session as a beautiful accompaniment to their newborn session.
